I want my work to explore the different perspectives of drawing, in particular, how women view women. I am interested in how the female gaze shapes the way that femininity is represented and perceived. Drawings are often subjective and express emotions and thoughts that enable a deeper connection to the person depicted.
[ The female gaze ]
I want to show how I, as a woman, see women. The artist's gaze is decisive - what I see, feel, and want to depict, is what characterises my work. Drawings are often subjective and express my emotions and thoughts, while photos capture a moment and offer a different kind of reality.
[ Irritation between photography and drawing ]
I work with the excitement of what is revealed between the "authenticity" claimed by photos, and the creative freedom of my drawings. While photos can appear to show reality, they have often been manipulated. My drawings, some of which are not perfect, show that this imperfection is part of their beauty and conveys an important message: Perfection is not beauty.
[ Imperfection and filters]
In my work, I deliberately present excerpts that represent imperfection. These excerpts challenge the idea of perfection and leave room for interpretation. It is what is missing that provokes thought, revealing that it is often more interesting.
[ Complex creation vs. the speed of photography ]
Another aspect of my work is the contrast between the complex creation of drawings and the speed at which photos are taken. While drawings require time, patience and care, photography captures a fleeting moment. These contrasting approaches show how the creative process can influence the perception of women.
[ Naming my drawings ]
An important part of my art is naming the finished drawings. These names are intended to emphasise the personality of the person portrayed and give the work an individual identity. They encourage the viewer to engage more intensively with the figure and think about its backstory. The relationship between the drawing and its name creates a deeper emotional connection and strengthens the viewer's bond to the person depicted. It is the name that transforms the work into a unique personality.
[ The point of my work ]
I want my drawings to make people think about how the media influences our perception of women. I want to demonstrate how the female gaze is multifaceted, often discovering so much more beauty in imperfection.
